Using Neuroplasticity to Recover Lost Skills

Concussion, Mild, Moderate and Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, Non-Traumatic Hypoxic Brain Injury….regardless of the name and type, brain injury negatively impacts the neural connections and damages cognitive skills, limiting function and keeping survivors from returning to their pre-injury selves. The great news is that there is real hope.

Regardless of how much time has transpired from an injury until now, The Nectar Group can help! We begin by pinpointing the cognitive deficits caused by the injury and then we create a custom, individualized plan to improve and repair those deficits to restore lost skills and improve function through cognitive skills training.

"Nothing more that can be done."

Many of our clients have been told that because they had a mild or moderate concussion and because of how much time has elapsed, there is no way that the linger effects they are experiencing are caused by the injury. Others are told that after initial treatment has been completed, there is just nothing more that can be done. Family members might notice that even though the acute symptoms have subsided their child or other family member is just not the same as they used to be. Their thinking, mood, and personality has never returned to pre-injury normalcy.

It can be stressful, overwhelming, and even heartbreaking to think that there is no hope. Most therapies for people with brain injuries focus on compensatory measures to help live with and work around the injury. While these types of accommodations and modifications are necessary and helpful at times, they are not treatments that help actually regain lost skills and function.

There is real hope!

The great news is that there is hope! Cognitive Training capitalizes on one of the amazing and innate characteristics of the brain, neuroplasticity: “Neuro” as in neuron or brain and “plasticity” as in plastic or moldable and bendable; in other words, the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. Neuroplasticity allows for damaged pathways to be rebuilt and thus brain function is improved.

Many of our clients report improvements such as:

Assessments to Pinpoint Challenges:

The first step in getting help is to use assessments to determine which parts of the brain are not functioning optimally. The Nectar Group is dedicated to uncovering the specific areas of brain function that need improvement to overcome thinking and learning challenges. We start by pinpointing your difficulties using the most current and trusted assessments. Check out our Assessments page to learn more details about testing options.

Cognitive Training to Overcome Damage...

Once we complete the assessment process, we will meet with you to review your results, provide recommendations, and create an action plan for intervention. Most clients then begin a cognitive training program. You can think of cognitive training as similar to working out with a personal trainer but for your brain. “After working with The Nectar Group for just 12 weeks, I am amazed at the progress I’ve made with my memory. My coach has me doing exercises that are challenging. I have experienced definite advancement in information processing and the strengthening of neuro-pathways between eye and brain. My coach pushes my brain to its limits each time and the result is quantifiable progress in many areas.” ~Diane, age 64
