Symptoms: Some of the most common challenges are difficulty with self-management and self-regulation, struggles with organizing tasks, completing homework on time, and planning ahead.
How it is diagnosed: Comprehensive cognitive testing and observation of symptoms.
What causes it:ย These skills are most commonly underdeveloped due to weaknesses in the key cognitive skills of working memory, logic and reasoning, and executive processing speed. Weaknesses are also caused by lack of relationships and unstable or traumatic home environments and a lack of opportunity to develop independence and problem-solving skills.
How we treat it: Study Skills and Executive Function Difficulties are treated through explicit instruction, modeling best practices, and application of skills learned to actual schoolwork. Intervention focuses on developing the following skills: Time management and organization, test taking, study strategies, note taking, critical thinking skills, study habits, study hacks, and self-advocacy and responsibility.
